Avesta has 21.583 inhabitants and are introducing fare-free buses the summer of 2012.
The zero fare scheme has proved to be a success för the municipality. Ridership is up 80%, the buses have gained 13% new commuters and 39% of new journeys were replacing a car drive. This also means that CO2-emissions are down by 40.000 kilos.
