On the 22 August 2011 Kiruna will start offering free public transport for citizens. Since then, bus ridership has doubled. In order to ride for free a small fee has to be paid for a bus card. It is necessary to prove Kiruna citizenship when acquiring the card.
Kiruna Kommun won Planka.nu’s Nolltaxepris (eng. Free Public Transport Award) in 2011.
In maj 2011 – before fares were abolished – bus riders in May was 12551. In May 2013 this number was 32118.
