Free and Accessible Transit Campaign

The Free and Accessible Transit Campaign is organized as part of the Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly and has been in operation for about 4 months. We argue and organize for the right of mobility for everyone, embodied in an expanded fully public transit system that does not charge fares for using it. With transit as a right – paid out of general tax revenues, just like basic medical care – cities such as Toronto could dramatically expand public transit, creating new manufacturing jobs, helping the environment, and showing how collective rights and services can make cities more livable.

Fare-free and accessible transit would have to be part of a larger effort to force higher levels of government to properly fund cities and challenge the right-wing mantra of tax-cutting and privatization.
